(UEL/PR) While we shall not argue which use of language came first, there is no doubt that a principal function of language is the transmission of information.
Information itself is a wide term, and implies chiefly data of an objective, utilitarian kind. In most situations, basic data of course will include reasons, origins, relations, and distinctions, as well as plain facts. It is also important to observe that what seems to be objective information may at times be subtly coloured by other factors.
